1st Annual Sports Day

The purpose of this event is to expose girls to a variety of sports as well as provide their families with health & wellness resources from local organizations in the Charlottesville area.

The event was free to the public. The sporting clinics are for ages 14 & under. ALL kids will need to be accompanied by an adult.

Sports provided included: Basketball, Field Hockey, Football, Lacrosse, Soccer, and Volleyball

Participating organizations: Alkaline Vegan Family, BCBA Elite Empire, Black Youth Student Alliance, BRHD, Charlottesville Derby Dames, CVILLE Pride, DJ Double U, First Tee, Girls on The Run, LoveNoEgo, Julian Jukebox, Mobilee Delicious, Mom2Mom, RegionTen, SHE, Store Truck, Women’s Initiative.

Charlottesville Strongest Woman

Seven young ladies had the opportunity to train with Charlottesville’s Strongest Woman, Monica Johnson. They were able to observe and participate her preparation for competition .

HER TIME TO PLAY Program

In partnership with the JR NBA curriculum and sport development, participants had the opportunity to discuss life topics based on health & wellness, healthy choices, positive peer circles and mental support while learning the game of basketball.

W.O.C.H.A Program

In partnership with W.O.C.H.A (Women of Color, Honor, and Ambition) and RISE Together Mentoring , 13 female athletes will participate in a series of monthly virtual workshops from January - June 2021, focusing on character and leadership development including the Dale Carnegie Leadership series. The ladies will have access to great staff and mentors including, RISE Together Directors Gina & Bryan Christ, Buford Middle School Counselor Joshua Epps, and Vice President for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Community Partnerships and Founder of WOCHA, Dr. Kevin McDonald.

BASIC FUNDAMENTALS CLINIC

HER Sports hosted 6 free clinics to Charlottesville and surrounding counties to 2 age groups, 4th-7th and 8th-12th graders. A host of leaders within our community, volunteered their time to help share their gifts and talents with the girls. Fluvanna High School graduates Jules Shepherd and Mya Wright; Charlottesville High School All-Time Girls Basketball scorer, Andrea Barbour; Devin “Get Busy” Gentry; High School Standout Kymora Johnson; Kendall Ballard; Ketaruh Barbour

“Staying in the Game”

HER Sports hosted 1st Virtual Webinar. “Staying in the Game” was a conversation around overcoming obstacles and increasing girls participation in sports. This conversation brought back local heroes; Megan Hughes, Sarah Jo Lawerence, Maisie Osteen, Jess Stafford from the Class of 2004’ and some of our future trailblazers of the Central VA area: RayQuel Allen, Mariah Cain, Madison Flint, Kymora Johnson, Andrea Leftowitz, Ashley Morani, Hailey Morris, Madelyn Packer, Amaya Pendelton, and Kate Wallace.

Summer Workouts

During phase 2 of the COVID Pandemic in June 2020, we offered free workout sessions outside, twice a week, focusing on conditioning and basic fundamentals.
